Portal frames are normally associated with commercial buildings rather than residential properties. However they can be used to good effect when there are large open areas, particularly when there is a vaulted ceiling as well. The steel frames not only support the roof to allow a vaulted ceiling but they also provide lateral restraint to the walls which would otherwise either have to be much thicker than normal or have wind posts embedded in the wall.
We need the following information to design a steel portal frame:
architectural layout and elevations or sketch drawings with dimensions
details of the type of construction
Design information
All design work is carried out in accordance with BS5950 (The structural use of steelwork) and BS5628 (The structural use of masonry)
The calculations provided will be suitable for Building Regulation approval.
