Timber has been used for Century's as a structural material, but its use these days is largely limited to the construction of floors and roofs. However, wider acceptance is gradually creeping in, with timber framed construction becoming more and more popular, especially in Scotland.
In new properties, timber columns are normally designed as a feature, but they are surprisingly strong and are well able to support floors and timber beams.
Our structural calculations for timber columns assumes that the column is an integral part of the building (ie it is supporting an axial load only).
We need the following information to design a timber column:
architectural layouts or sketch drawings with dimensions, so we can work out all the loadings on the column
details of the type of construction (concrete or timber floors)
Design information
All design work is carried out in accordance with BS5268 'The structural use of timber'.
The calculations provided will be suitable for Building Regulation approval.
