These are normally needed around openings such as staircases. They may be designed using timber or steel, depending on the loadings and the span of the beam.
Our structural calculations for a trimmer beam includes the design of either a steel or timber beam.
We need the following information to design trimmer beams:
architectural layouts or sketch drawings with dimensions, so we can work out all the loadings on the beam
details of the type of construction (concrete or timber floors etc)
details of any restrictions on the maximum depth of the beam
Design information
All design work is carried out in accordance with BS5950 (The structural use of steelwork) or BS5268 (The structural use of timber).
The calculations provided will be suitable for Building Regulation approval.
